Shango, one of the most revered orishas in Yoruba ancestral religion, became central to the spiritual practices that emerged in the Caribbean during the transatlantic slave trade. However, the African Shango, known for his multiplicity and performative fluidity, underwent a radical transformation. In the process of migration and adaptation, Shango was simplified and normalised, becoming a fixed, heteronormative figure shaped by the religious and cultural imperatives of coloniality.
