We need Migration Policy, plus Population Policy plus National Futures Policy.
With immigration, ageing and fertility being lead political topics in the current Australian electoral environment, alongside the cost of living and wages, and with global conflict and trade issues ever present, the question of positioning migration and population in national decision-making and in national futures planning will be the focus of discussion here. The question is asked: how can we do better?

Glenn Withers is an Emeritus Professor in the Crawford School at ANU, a former President of the Australian Academy of the Social Sciences and current Board Chair of the Global Development Learning Network. He was co-chair of the former National Population Council and received an AO award for his role there in developing the Australian Immigration Points System. His research includes economic and economic history aspects of immigration, especially labour and education dimensions.
